Surah An-Nazi'at

Those Who Pull Out

النَّازِعَات

Surah An-Nazi'at opens with an oath by the angels who carry out Allah's commands — extracting souls, racing through the heavens, managing affairs. It then turns to the certainty of resurrection and the seriousness of the Day we meet Allah.

1Ayah 1

وَالنَّازِعَاتِ غَرْقًا

By those angels who pull out the souls forcefully.

What it means

  • Allah begins the surah by swearing an oath.
  • The majority of scholars say this refers to angels who extract the souls of disbelievers.
  • Some souls are taken harshly because of the life they chose.
  • Death is the beginning of the next journey, not the end.

Reflection

Death is not equal for everyone.

For some people, death is the most frightening moment they will ever experience.

For the believer, the goal is not simply to avoid death.

The goal is to live in a way that makes meeting Allah something to look forward to.
